Welcome to CMC 2024!

Please go through the rules and competition structure outlined below.

Registration

Participants must register for Cathedral Math Competition 2024 by filling out this Google Form.

The competition is free and open to all students from grade 7 to grade 12 (academic year 2024-25 for Indian national curriculum and academic year 2023-24 for international curriculum). Participants may register individually, or schools may register participants in bulk. There is no minimum requirement or maximum limit to the number of participants from any school or region. The CMC Administration encourages schools to register all interested students for the competition. There is no registration or participation fee for the competition. The last date to register for the competition is Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

By registering for CMC 2024, participants and schools agree to be bound by the rules and competition structure outlined on this page. Participating schools agree to ensure strict audio and visual supervision of their participants during the entire competition. It is the responsibility of participating schools and their respective supervisors to ensure that participants do not engage in any form of unethical behavior.

Categories

The competition has three categories to equitably cater to students spanning various age groups. Based on the student’s school grade (class) – for Indian national curriculum as per the academic year 2024-25 and for international curriculum as per the academic year 2024-25  these categories are:

Junior: Grades 7 & 8
Intermediate: Grades 9 & 10
Senior: Grades 11 & 12

The questions are different for each category and are designed to be consistent with the academic level of that category.

Syllabus

There is no set syllabus for the junior and intermediate categories of the competition. The idea of the competition is not to test students on concepts they have not encountered previously but to evaluate their understanding of concepts they have already learnt. Questions will be largely based on logical reasoning and an in-depth analysis of such concepts.

Since the syllabus for higher-level mathematics varies with region and program of study, an outline of the syllabus for the senior category has been provided as follows: sets, functions, algebra, trigonometry, binomial theorem, coordinate geometry (including equations describing conic sections), permutations and combinations, complex numbers, logarithms and exponents, probability, arithmetic and geometric progressions and series, matrices and determinants, pre-calculus (polar functions and limits), calculus-1 (basic differentiation including power rule and chain rule and L’Hospital’s Rule).
The final round of the senior category may additionally require knowledge of inequality theorems, properties of roots of polynomials, modular arithmetic, and logarithmic changes.

Resources

Reference question banks for practice are available here.

Rounds

Each category of the competition has two rounds as follows:

1. Qualifier Round
20 questions | 1 hour 30 minutes | multiple choice and short answer type questions
For participating individuals, this round will be conducted by The CMC Administration via Discord on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 5 PM IST. Participating schools will be permitted to individually administer this round to their students anytime between 8 AM and 8 PM IST, as convenient, on Saturday, July 13, 2024.

2. Final Round
15 questions | 1 hour | multiple choice and short answer type questions
Based on the scores of the qualifier round, the top 20% of all participants of each category shall be invited to participate in the final round of the competition. This round will be conducted by The CMC Administration for ALL selected participants on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at 5 PM IST.

Responses and Scoring

Each round has two types of questions: multiple choice questions and short answer type questions. Participants must respond to multiple choice questions by typing the lowercase alphabet corresponding to the answer they wish to select from among the given options and to short answer type questions by typing the value or expression of their answer in the box provided.

Participants shall receive 7 points for each correct answer, 2 points for each question that is not attempted (skipped), and 0 points for each incorrect answer. There is no negative marking in the sense of the term but points are awarded for skipped questions.

Prizes

All participants shall receive a Participation Certificate.

The top 20% of all participants of each category, who are selected for the final round, shall receive a Distinction Certificate.

For each category, based on their scores of the final round only, the top 10% of finalists shall receive the Gold Award, the next 15% of finalists shall receive the Silver Award, and the next 25% of finalists shall receive the Bronze Award.

For each category, there shall be an Aryabhatta Award for the best school. Only registered schools with a minimum of 5 participants in a particular category can qualify for the Aryabhatta Award for that category. The school for which the sum of scores of its top 3 scoring participants is maximum in a particular category shall receive the award for that category. This sum will include scores of both rounds (qualifier and final), taking 0 as the final round score of participants who don’t qualify for the finals.

Equipment Policy

Participants are NOT permitted to use calculators or any other aid of any kind. However, participants may use scratch paper and pencil for rough work during the competition. Participants may be requested to show that the sheets of paper being used are indeed blank.
